Question: Why do you need security guard training to get a Security Guard license in the state of New York?
Answer: It's the law.
The Security Guard Act of 1992 requires the training and registration (licensing) of security guards in New York State.
It also requires all private security guard training schools to be approved and their trainers to be certified.
It is a criminal offense in New York State to work as a security guard or hire security guards without the proper license from the New York State Department of State Division of Licensing Services.
Note: Certain active law enforcement officers (police)
are exempt from licensing, and if retired may be otherwise waived from part or all of required security guard training in their first years of retirement. Active/retired LEO'S please use this link to the New of Criminal Justice Services (DCJS)York State Division Office of Public Safety for more information provided for your convenience) or call us at (631) 991-2620.
NOTE: HR 218 or S 1132 does not exempt retired LEO's from the training requirements for armed guard registration.
